So what is the difference between apple sauce and apple butter? About 5 hours and a cup of sugar. When looking up recipes for homemade apple sauce and apple butter that is the only difference I could find.
For my apple butter I peeled and cored my apples, approx 6 1/2 lbs, added 1 tsp of cinnamon and 1 cup of organic sugar. The recipes I found said to use 1-2 cups of sugar to taste. I cooked on high for 1 hour and the rest on low. The last hour I removed the lid. I then canned in a water bath canner for 10 minutes. I am at sea level so if you are at a higher altitude you will have to check your time.
For my applesauce I am used approx 6 1/2 lbs of apples, 2 tsp of cinnamon and no sugar. If you use tart apples you may want to add sugar. I cookied this on high for 5 hours. I will put my jars water bath for 10 minutes.
Most of the recipes for applesauce say to use a mixture of apples for the best taste. I used Ginger Gold from BJ’s and Pink Pearls from Space Girl Organics. The Pink Pearls will add a beautiful color and flavor.
I really like the 4oz jars that I found at Walmart as they are a perfect size for just the two of us and to give as gifts.
My new favorite labels are from Garden Therapy.
